Our public roadways are for everyone; car drivers, trucks, bikers and cyclists. Cyclists love riding Mount Diablo because it offers a test of vigor and skill, and scenic pleasures beyond a normal biking trail. However, bikers do understand the dangers, as Bruce McConnell from the Press Democrat explains:
I will caution that nearly all of the cycling accidents on Diablo are on the downhill descent as riders overlook corners or collide with cars passing going uphill. Slow down, the view going down should be experienced not raced.
Analysis Finds Bay Area Youth Most At Risk Of Bicycle Accidents
A Bay Citizen analysis of bicycle accident data from the California Highway Patrol found that young cyclists are at the highest risk of being involved in a bicycle accident than are other age groups. Bay Area cyclists ages 10 to 19 were involved in more traffic collisions than any other age group: more than 3,200 from 2005 to 2009. Nearly half of those accidents involved boys ages 12 to 16.
In an locale filled with thousands of adult cyclists, including aggressive cyclists who sprint through congested cities at high speeds, data showing that youngsters are most prone to accidents surprised even the bicycle advocates. The key takeaway from the study was the need for early education about traffic laws and safety.
The highway patrol compiles information about bicycle accidents from local police reports. According to the data, San Jose had 434
collisions involving teenagers, the most of any Bay Area city. Oakland was second with 193. “I would have thought it would be males in their 20s” who would have the highest accident rates, said Renee Rivera, head of the East Bay Bike Coalition. “Anecdotally, I see mostly young adults cycling.”
In fact, cyclists in their 20s ran a close second for collisions with motorists — about 3,100 from 2005 to 2009.
According to the analysis, teenagers were judged by the police to be at fault 63 percent of the time. By contrast, cyclists in their 20s were faulted in only 46 percent of the bicycle accidents.
According to both police and experts in bicycle safety, adolescents often put themselves in danger because they are unfamiliar with traffic laws. For example, the California Vehicle Code requires cyclists to ride on the right side of the road and follow all traffic rules, including stop signs, traffic lights and signaling.
“Bicyclists don’t think they’re vehicles on the roadway,” Sgt. Steve Paich of the Oakland Police said. “They feel like they should be treated like pedestrians.” Many teenagers think it is legal to ride their bicycles in the crosswalk, for example. “Riding in the crosswalk,” he said, “means you’re riding on the wrong side of the road,” which is the ticketing category for riding in a crosswalk.
According to the data, adolescent cyclists were cited for being on the wrong side of the road two and a half times more than for any other individual violation. Additionally, adolescents were found to be on the wrong side of the road more than any other riders.

The Danger of Accident and Injury to Bicyclists on San Francisco Streets
The layout of San Francisco’s urban terrain, combined with its high population density and traffic congestion creates significant danger for motorists and cyclists. As the population increases, as does the popularity of cycling, the occurrence of accidents involving a bicycle and a motor vehicle also increases. Bike accidents reported to the police climbed to 593 last year from 554 in 2009 according to data compiled by The Bay Citizen, a seven percent increase.
Over the past two years the San Francisco Police Department recorded a total of 1,147 bicycle accidents. Routine road violations are the most common reasons for bike accidents, according to the data. Speeding (primarily by cyclists) and illegal turns (primarily by cars), are the first and second leading causes of accidents, respectively. “Dooring,” when a parked motorist opens his or her door into the path of a cyclist, is the third. According to the Bay Citizen data, 101 drivers “doored” a cyclist in San Francisco during the two year period studied.
Drivers are nearly always at fault in doorings. Section 22517 of the California Vehicle Code states: “No person shall open the door of a vehicle on the side available to moving traffic unless it is reasonably safe to do so.”
The police normally write a report only when an injury in involved. Over the past two years, drivers were faulted by the police in 573 accidents involving vehicles and bikes — 57 percent of the total — according to the data. Cyclists were to blame in 428 accidents, or 43 percent.
There are more bikers on the streets of San Francisco than ever. There are 58 percent more than in 2006, when the Municipal Transportation Agency started doing spot counts once a year. New lanes and innovative safety measures are becoming more common, including pylon-protected bike paths on Market Street, where waves of cyclists commute downtown each day. To make the streets even safer, the city is considering extending the separated bike lanes, which currently run from Gough Street to 8th on Market, all the way to the Embarcadero. Bike advocates say the lanes solve many safety problems, including the much-feared doorings.

- Slow down when moving through an intersection, and always come to a complete stop at a stop sign. Watch for cyclists at other entrances to the intersection. Check your mirrors and blind spots for any cyclists behind or beside your vehicle when making turns.
